My piano teacher from my high school days would probably be shocked to know that I used to think she only listened to classical music.
I remember well the day that she casually mentioned liking some popular rock group during a lesson. I think my jaw dropped to the floor. I didn’t think classical piano teachers were ALLOWED to listen to anything but classical music.
Now, as a piano teacher, I wonder if any of my students hold the same view towards me. I wonder if they would be surprised to hear my pre-set rock radio stations in my car or take a peek in my many CD boxes filled with rock music from today (and from my high school days) that they probably adore.
Would your students be suprised at some of your listening choices?

It’s funny, I don’t really listen to music that is very rocky, or poppy. I really enjoy a great song that I can play on the piano. I just learned Bennie and the Jets on the piano. I really enjoy these types of songs! I am not sure, If my students had anything to say about the music that I listen to, they might find it boring! LOL! (David Gray, Ben Folds, Paulo Nutini, Beatles, etc)
One of my absolute FAVORITE artists and idols is Ben Folds. It was funny, one of my students (12 year old) was looking in my music journal, looks back at me yesterday and says, “What is a Ben Folds?” LOL! After I explained WHO he was, we both had a good laugh together.
I enjoy telling my students about trying to find not only a good band or singer, but a good musician in their eyes. It is so important to me that they be exposed to music that really moves them. I always let my students pick their primary pieces. They seem to really enjoy this. Hmm, let’s see. here are a couple of pieces that my students are working on right now…..
“Hurt” by Christina Agulara
“The Charlie Brown Theme Song” (I know! isn’t this so cute!)
“Comptine d’une Autre Ete D’apres Midi” composer Yann Teirsen ( I might have had something to do with this one)
“White Horse” Taylor Swift
“How to Save a Life” The frey
“Fall for You” Second Second Hand Serenade
I then get them transposed to a key that each one is currently working on, and comfortable with; and we go from there!
These are just a couple of examples to give you a feel for the variety that I get to experience day to day!

I have to pause for a while and think for several times: Would my students be surprised at some of my listening choices? The same question keeps on boggling my mind. (funny but so real… hahaha)
Honestly, I haven’t thought of that. Thanks for making me think over and over. I needed to discern and reminisce times if my students have ever gotten into thinking or learning my listening choices.
I like classical music and great songs that I can play on my piano – relaxing and recharging my batteries after some tiring workloads on weekdays.

Well music in any form is so beautiful. It is not necessary that classical music preachers do not listen to pop or jazz.
I would surely love to learn more. According to me music is one thing which requires more of practice than theory lessons. One should keep practicing to master the art.
