Relax, Share, and Laugh!
16 Jun
I’m sure you ran to the computer this morning to see if I posted the giveaway I teased about yesterday. I wouldn’t even be surprised if you lost sleep over it. And for that, I am sorry. But, tonight, you can get some good rest, comfortable in your knowledge of the fantastic giveaway here at Piano Teacher’s Retreat.
Discountlessonbooks, a great website that offers savings on all method books and teaching materials, is doing another great giveaway!
This week, you can win the complete Mozart Sonatas and Fantasies for the piano, edited by Broder. You can see the list of those sonatas and fantasies here.
If you win, you don’t even have to share this giveaway with your students. (I wouldn’t!)
To win: Leave a comment on this post, telling me any or all of the following: 1. your favorite thing about teaching, 2. your least favorite thing about teaching, 3. your favorite composer to play, 4. your favorite color, or 5. your favorite thing about me. (That last one was a joke, of course.)
The results of the giveaway will be announced June 22. As always, you can get extra entries for blogging about this giveaway or sending a friend to comment.
Thanks for reading!

I love playing Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Barber. My favorite color is green (a nice green) Please enter me!
I love playing Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart
My favorite color is a rosy pink (like a sunset). My favorite part of teaching is when a student gets excited; when they come to lessons with the smile that says “I worked hard on this, wait until you hear it!” I am most frustrated when a student is unmotivated, no ambition to practice. That is discouraging. Your blog has given me creative ideas- thanks!
And thanks for the giveaway!
I love playing Beethoven. Please sign me up for the giveaway.
My favorite color is blue. I love playing Debussy
1. Favorite thing about teaching–students who love piano! 2. Least favorite–uncooperative students or parents. 3. Favorite composer to play–this year it’s Chopin! 4. Favorite color–this year it’s green. 5. Favorite thing about you–your faaaaantastic ideas, your love of life, enthusiasm, your beautiful piano playing, this blog….oh wait, that’s more than one….but I could go on. (no bribe intended)
Rebecca, my least favorite thing about teaching is parents who don’t see the need to be involved in their children’s music education. Fortunately, most of my current students have very supportive and involved parents. Please enter me in your wonderful giveaway!
p.s. I just love your blog and I’m so happy I discovered you!
My favorite thing about teaching is seeing my students excited about a piece that they are playing. My least favorite would be students who come week after week without practicing, but thankfully it has been many years since I have had that problem.
My favorite composer to play is Debussy. My favorite color changes from day to day, but my 4 year old will quickly respond that his is green.
I would have to agree with someone else that my favorite thing about you would be the wonderful teaching ideas that you give here on your blog.
Thank you!
1. Favorite thing about teaching- seeing the smiles from students when they make music each week. 2. Least favorite thing about teaching- dealing with difficult parents 3. Favorite composer to play- right now it’s Jon Schmidt 4. Favorite color- Purple 5. Favorite thing about you- your wonderful ideas and willingness to share.
Thank you!
I have been teaching for over fifty years, beginners through Master’s Degree. My favorite thing about teaching is that even after all these years, every student has different needs and has to be approached in a different way. I love the challenge of figuring out how to approach each one, and the joy of finding what works. I love taking a reluctant transfer student and seeing him/her turn into an enthusiastic student who enjoys playing the piano.
Speaking of Mozart, I performed the entire Sonata K.545 at the age of eight, and the D minor Fantasie a year later, and am very glad there were no recording capabillities at that time!

My favorite thing about teaching is seeing young students eyes light up when the ‘get’ it. My least favorite thing about teaching is early morning lessons! My favorite composer to play at the moment is Clementi. My favorite color is purple. My favorite thing about you is your blog and your willingness to help others in the same boat. Don’t ever stop updating!
I thought I’d left my comment, but obviously I didn’t!
I love being my own boss and watching students grow as musicians! I don’t like having to deal with parents over problems or late payments. I like green, playing Brahms, and reading all of your good tips as well as anecdotes about your daughter!
My favorite thing about teaching is the times when my student’s eyes light up with understanding.
What a nice treat!
My favorite thing about teaching? The comedienne in me wants to say, “the short commute from my kitchen to the studio on the other side of the house….”
But seriously, I just love it when my students “turn the corner” and start to play more intuitively from the page; when they graduate from reading the music from beat to beat, to reading measure to measure, and then eventually seeing phrases and form as they sight-read… You know what I mean! They might not even realize they do it, but by then they are starting to really “get it” in terms of translating the page. Then they learn their pieces faster and can really begin to “take off” in terms of repertoire.
BTW, I tell my students that my job is to make myself obsolete, so they can take any piece of music off the shelf and learn it. They seem to be surprised by that.
1. my favorite thing about being a (homeschool) teacher is when i see the kids “Get it”… that moment when it all makes sense..
2. my least favorite part is the planning.
3. by far, mozart!
4. brown
5. that you’re having a giveaway!
thanks for the chance!
I love to play Schumann — and Gershwin — and Haydn — and….
My favorite color is purple.
In teaching, it’s frustrating when parents don’t see the need to be involved in their child’s music education — but still expect to see results — like just paying for lessons creates a musician!
The thought of free Mozart music gives me chills!

My favorite thing about teaching is the time spent with each student, making music. My least favorite is the student who hasn’t practiced during the week and comes to the lesson with a bad attitude because they have to work harder at the lesson. I like Chopin, Debussy, Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and so many others. My favorite color is green. This is a great giveaway! Thanks
I love to see their eyes light up when they get it. I don’t care for all the paperwork, business side. Blue is my favorite color. Please enter me in the give away
1. Reward of teaching: Sharing knowledge that makes my music students better people is a constant teaching reward.
2. Dreads: Teaching a music course that is mandatory in an elementary school can be challenging, when some of the enrolled do not want to be there. However, making things ‘fun’ is the best way of remedying this situation.
3. Favorite composers: Chopin and Beethoven (and me… I’m a composer)
4. Favorite color: Blue (not reflective of my mood)
5. Favorite thing about author: Your optimistic blog!
I love all the new games that I find on the websites that make teaching fun. I dislike the business end of teaching! My favorite composer is Chopin and my favorite color is blue. I love your sense of humor! I would love to win this giveaway, my Mozart Sonata music is all torn up!
My favourite part of teaching is the people – the parents who make/take the time out of their week to give their child(ren) an opportunity to get into the happy habit of music practice … and the kids who come week after week – most times happy to see me!
My least favourite is the time/scheduling – wish I had more time with my family in the evenings. My favourite colour is .. blue. I play a big variety of composers – but tend to lean toward classical/romantic period compositions.
