You know those Hello…My name is… nametags?
I’ve been using them for a fun and silly way to recognize good effort. My nametags just say Hello…(minus the My Name Is…)
When somebody does something exceptional, I write in on a nametag and have them wear it during and after lessons.
For example, Hello…I’m a Dynamic Queen.
-or-
Hello…I practiced every day this week.
-or-
Hello…I’ve got rhythm
-or-
Hello…I listened to everything my piano teacher said (Haven’t actually been able to use that one yet. Wouldn’t that be nice?)
The kids think it’s funny and love to show off to their parents.

Have you tried this at the beginning of the lesson? Put ‘Rhythm Master’ on the badge when the lesson begins – I’m sure the student in question will be better at rhythm.
Whilst I don’t use badges, I will often tell a student something like ‘you are better than anyone else at dynamics’ and the result is then that they usually are.
I’ve been using some sticky notes I bought that say “I caught you doing something extraordinary” and sticking these on their music, but I like your idea better!
This is good! Cracks me up a little! I once was telling a student something and had to repeat it several times because her mind was stuck on something else. I tapped into a pretend mic and said “Hello? Is this thing on?” Maybe I could write that on her nametag! LOL
Great idea. I want one that say, “Hello, I’m a great hair day.”
The name tag idea is very cute. The possibilities are endless, in terms of the commentary that you could put in there.
[...] tried several different incentives with this little guy, and finally landed on the goofy nametag idea, convinced his silly personality would enjoy it enough to practice. When that didn’t work, [...]
