Relax, Share, and Laugh!

The latest in my attempts to keep my toddler happy during lessons:
This is the landing on our stairs. I set up a reading nook and showed it to her before lessons by reading stories with her there. The first day of lessons, this worked like magic. She was enthralled with her new spot, and didn’t leave it once. After a few days, she was bored of the same ol’ toys I was putting there.
So now, I divide toys up into 4 baskets (I teach 4 days a week). Each basket has a couple books, a stuffed animal, a few small toys, and a big interactive toy (like a puzzle or filing folders with pictures). I put the basket on the landing with some library books. This works much better since she sees these toys only once a week.

What a great idea! I’m glad it seems to work for you. I really admire you for teaching with a baby! Usually my little brother is keep out of my hair during lessons ’cause my sister or mom watch him. Though sometimes he escapes and plays along with my students on the piano!
Thanks for the tips! I just hope these ideas will also be effective to my 3-year old boy. Hope you continue sharing your experiences, tips and resources for music teachers.
I think your blog is great! It has been really helpful to me as a new piano teacher. In fact I like it so much that I have just awarded you the One Lovely Blog Award. Have a look at http://nurturemama.blogspot.com/ for more details.
Summer may be a super time for you to train your daughter. There is less pressure, but still a somewhat formal lesson. You may even want to cue the students into what you are trying to do so that they don’t distract your daughter or feel uncomfortable while you correct her. I’m sure if you are consistent, you both will be able to handle it well.
I also swap child care with another mom one day a week. I will watch her daughter for part of a day and then she watch my son for a lesson day. I never wanted to pay for childcare just so I could teach, so having them with a friend in a mutual swap is very nice.
I am impressed you are able to give your student your full attention while also watching your toddler daughter. I have always had childcare while I am teaching because otherwise there is no way I could give my student my full attention otherwise. You must have very understanding parents in your studio and a very well-behaved child.
Your blog is great!
