This is not a mommy blog, but I am a mommy.  So please indulge me for a moment while I share some piano related baby pictures and stories!

I am amazed at what my 17 month old picks up from watching me teach lessons.

Her favorite books at story time are the Piano Adventure books (upside down, of course!).

Several months ago, she started sitting at the piano, and leafing through music books while she pounded the keys.  (Here, it’s a magazine, instead of a music book.  She’s not picky).

Then, she started “requesting” (pounding the bench and saying, “Ehhh Ehhh”) that I sit next to her while she plays.  So I started teaching her!  I showed her black keys and white keys.  She now will play a black key or white key when requested.  Many times, when I tell her to play a black key, she plays every black key within reach.  Next lesson: High and Low keys!

And this is the latest milestone.  She uses the pedal while playing!  I didn’t show her how to do this one.

All these things crack me up, but they make me really excited, too.  I love that she “copies” the things my students and I do.  I love that she is eager to try the piano out all by herself.  It’s also very encouraging to know that a young child can absorb so much of what she sees.  I haven’t decided yet if I will formally teach her myself or if I will send her to another teacher.  But while she is willing to learn, I am going to encourage her and help by teaching her new things here and there!
