I love the feedback I get on this site. Everyone has such great experience and offers helpful tips. I hope to get some good feedback on this topic.
How do you handle refreshments at recitals? I recently had a recital and asked for volunteers to bring refreshments. Only one parent volunteered, so I spent a lot of time baking cookies the day before (as well as setting up, printing programs, and all the other things involved in a recital). I felt like I should have required instead of asked for volunteers. However, after asking other people their opinion on this, I found that some people feel the teacher should provide refreshments since the parents are paying for lessons.
What do you think?

I think offering refreshments at recitals is a nice idea though I wouldn’t expect parents to do it as they are the customers really. I don’t normally offer refreshments at concerts but it really depends upon the venue. At one venue I use, an upstairs room of a church with a dropin cafe downstairs then I get a round of drinks in at the cafe downstairs afterwards.
When I used the cathedral cloister room for a christmas concert I went and bought loads of mince pies as well as tea/coffee juice and then found that most of the kids didn’t like mince pies so ended up having to eat them all myself!
I think I might do that again this christmas!
I think that refreshments are wonderful at the end of any recital….and I think that it is the teachers privilege to provide them in return for the hard work the kids have put forth . Music demands a performance and good performances demand a celebration. without simple refreshments, everyone is out the door and the kids that performed are the losers. No need for fancy or expensive food….kids are quite happy with punch and cookies. I charge a $15 enrollment fee and that takes care of the expense very nicely. Please don’t ask parents to do this small task…be a gracious host and everyone will love you for it!
I hold 3 recitals a year and only serve refreshments at the last one, which I provide. I have had Chrsitmas Open Houses before and had each family bring 2 dozen Christmas cookies. No one complained and it worked well. I wouldn’t do this at every recital, though. I have a friend who assigns 2 families to be the “hosts” at the recital and they provide the cookies and coffee, punch. Works for her.
The more I think about it the more I would say no even though when first asked the question I said yes.
As a teacher, I always payed for my refreshments a my final recital. Customers come first; also, my food bill never really was a heavy expense (cake, coffee, juice…).
