Relax, Share, and Laugh!

Natalie at Music Matters Blog is a genius, in my opinion. I’ve used several of her ideas and have been very successful with them. Lately, I have noticed that some of my students aren’t doing so well with note recognition. Just drilling flashcards isn’t fun. Natalie times her students while she plays several games and challenges them to beat scores in following weeks. So, taking that cue, I time my students while we do flashcards! I set the timer for 1 minute and we see how many the student can get correct in that minute. They normally always beat their score the next week, which makes them feel good about themselves.
Timing students while doing almost any drill is turning out to be a great way to motivate and help students be successful.
Do you have any other games or drills where timing your students would be beneficial?
One Response for "One Minute Games"
I do the One Minute Club every spring. I got the idea from Jane Bastien, but I’ve made up my own “membership” cards that I print on business cards. It actually takes a student about 3 years to be able to do them in a minute. The fastest student in the studio gets a gift certificate and never has to do try out again.
