I have noticed that a lot of my beginners confuse keys F & G at the keyboard. I don’t know how to help them overcome this. I mentioned this perplexing problem to my handsome hubbie and his ridiculous response was, “Well, they used to hit kid’s hands with rulers whenever they made mistakes.”

While appreciative of my husband’s interest in my business, I can’t help but think that his suggestion is slightly -oh what’s the word- WRONG! Does anyone have a better suggestion, or must I resort to coporal punishment?

Haha! Yes, I’m pretty sure that that method of teaching is out-dated now…
One of the very first things I have students do is go up and down the piano keyboard playing all the A’s, and saying the name as they play each one. Then, on to B’s, then C’s, etc. After a week (or more, if necessary) of doing this, we do some fun speed games. I set a timer to one minute and play random keys all over the piano, one at a time. The student has to name each one as fast as he can and see how many he can get in one minute. Then we switch and I call the key name and he has to play the correct key on the piano. I record the scores in the assignment book and then he tries to beat them the next week. It’s nothing fancy, but drilling this really intensely at the start of lessons seems to eliminate the forgetfulness that I’ve experienced with other students in the past.
Oh that’s a good idea! I also like that you record their times from week to week. I think I’m going to do this with every one of my beginners next week. I’m tired of the confusion!
